About

Barramundi or Asian Sea Bass in Iran

Barramundi known as Sea Bass in Asia (Lates calcarifer), is a white fish with sweet, aromatic flesh and a mild flavor and almost tender texture, similar to redfish and grouper. This fish is only native to the Indo-Pacific region of the ocean and its main habitat is between India, Southeast Asia and Australia. The word barramundi is taken from the language of the aborigines of Australia, where it means “big river fish”.
Part of its life cycle is spent in rivers and estuaries so barramundi can live in both fresh and salt water. This means that farmed barramundi can be raised in ponds, cages, and freshwater tanks. Some barramundi are farmed in Iowa, more than 1,000 miles from any ocean. This fish is found in cages in a large part of the Persian Gulf near Hormozgan and Bushehr.

Barramundi is classified in the category of catadromous fish, which, during the breeding season, live in the waters of It leaves the salty and salty waters and migrates to the salty waters of the sea (mostly in the estuary).

The main advantages of barramundi as an ideal choice for aquaculture include:

– Reproduction of this fish in a hatchery is relatively simple.
– The growth rate of barramundi is high and its harvest weight (between six months and two years) reaches 350 grams to 3 kilograms.
